This new concept from Nokia is just awesome. It combines mobile phoning with everything else a technic freak or business man needs. The best is the whole lot of features it offers and it's one-time perfect design!!! This new product has brought in a revolution into the world of mobile phones and I am sure many other companies will follow it. |

Nokia firstly realized the idea of full keypad in the phone of middle class, Nokia 5510. This handset was targeted to youth market. Apart from a possibility to input quickly SMS-messages, the phone supports FM radio and mp3 player. Large dimensions and high price were those driving forces that made the phone unclaimed. Nevertheless, Nokia decided to make another try, taking into account previous marketing mistakes. Nokia 6800 is positioned not only as the phone, which enables to create SMS messages, but also to receive and send e-mails. So, to some extent, this handset is aimed to business customers. Designers tried to remain a classic, more common shape of the phone, at least, in closed mode. On the one hand, the handset has rather large dimensions (119 x 55 x 23 mm), but on the other, don't forget that it has a full QWERTY keypad. Depth and width of Nokia 6800 don't differ from other phones greatly, but the height is larger. This handset is rather heavy, it weighs 122 grams. We think that unlike ladies most gentlemen will be pleased to have this phone. There is no problem to find a suitable hostel for this handset; universal cases are quite acceptable. At first sight, it is not clear that Nokia 6800 has QWERTY keypad. The phone has a usual shape. Soft keys are placed under the screen, also a navigational 4-directional joystick (but it can't be pressed) is located there. Alphanumerical keys are made of plastic, all keys are placed deep into the phone, but the keypad is rather comfortable and easy, although, to say the truth, many phones has handier keypads, for example Nokia 6610. First peculiarity of Nokia 6800 is that a power on/off key is positioned above the screen, on front cover of the phone, what is not typical for Nokia. Now, on the upper side of the phone we can see contact sets of a large keypad. To open it, pull lower part of the phone up and turn it round (180 degrees) against stop. By the way, you should make effort to do it. At first, users, who get used to manage carefully with the phone, feel discomfort, but after a little practice they don't have any difficulties. Probably, such kind of construction is one of the reasons of it reliability. When the phone is open, it has longer size and the screen switched to landscape mode (turn at the angle 90 degrees). To lock and unlock a keypad we used a standard keys combination (Menu key + *) in our sample. If you open the phone, and forget to unlock a keypad before, you can't do it in the open mode because there is no extra * there, and you have to close the phone, then unlock a keypad and then again open the phone. It's not logical, isn't it? When the phone is open, you can see a keypad, which is divided by the screen. It is convenient to hold the phone with two hands and input text by thumbs. As a keyboard layout is standard, you get used to it easily; keys size is optimal. It's necessary to add that you can input several concatenated messages during two minutes (more than 450 characters); it's not tiresome. Joystick is less comfortable, especially in closed mode. But in the whole, the keypad is quite acceptable and allows to input texts very quickly. By default, an internal keypad backlighting is always switched off, probably, to save power consumption. To switch it on, just press a left key in the upper row. If you don't use the phone during fixed time, the backlighting is automatically turned off. The phone has a standard screen of the platform 40. It is a TFT-display with the resolution of 128x128 pixels, which can show up to 8 text lines and 2 service lines. In usual modes (not SMS or E-mail) up to 5 lines of information can be displayed, but the font is large. Up to 4096 colors are displayed on the screen and it is comparable to Nokia 7210/6610/6100. A volume key is placed on the left-hand side of the phone, IR-port is positioned on the right-hand side. Traditionally, system connector is placed on the bottom of the phone. If to look at the rear part of the handset, one can see a battery cover. It has a little backlash, because it is fixed only by one lock on the bottom. The phone is equipped with lithium-ion battery (BLC-2) of 1000 mAh capacity. According to the manufacturer, it has up to 150-320 hours of stand-by time and 2-6 hours of talking time. More capacious battery compared with Nokia 7210 is really necessary, if you prefer making calls to writing SMS messages. In this case the phone works 1 day longer than Nokia 7210. Using of QWERTY keypad reduces phone's autonomy in case of the same talking time. For example, our phone worked approximately 4 days in case of 50 minutes of talking (Beeline network), 30 minutes of listening to radio and 1 hour of using other applications. Probably, in some other networks the phone will be able to work 5-6 days. But this difference is not so important, the main thing is that the phone has good autonomy. Time of full re-charging is about 2 hours. In response to connection quality, volume of the loudspeaker, Nokia 6800 is a typical representative of a new phone's generation. There are no great differences and peculiarities here. It has a weak vibrating alert, which is not easy to feel. Hard opening mechanism allows to think that the phone will serve long and all keys will be in order. The phone is ideal to write SMS messages and e-mails. It can substitute two devices (HPC and the phone) and even sometimes notebook in short trips (one-two days). It's pleasint that you can use the handset in closed mode as an ordinary phone. The shortcoming is that Nokia 6800 has rather massive size, but may be it will be attractive to some gentlemen. In spite of integrated e-mail client, Nokia 6800 is most likely serious youth phone, than business phone, because there are no such features as voice memo, voice dialing and some others. We think, that it is a niche handset, aimed to special customers, though according to company Nokia 6800 is a business phone. It is expected the phone will be available in March and the price would be about 500 Euro. Then, it would fall down to 400 Euro. |
