Nokia 3220 is a tri-band cameraphone, which makes it suitable for global roaming. There are also many useful features incorporated within this handset, including EDGE, GPRS and HSCSD data handling technology, WAP and xHTML browser capability, MMS multimedia messaging, video clip recording download and playback, speakerphone for hands-free conversations, voice memo recorder (audio recording of up to 3 minutes), Java™ enabled, voice control (for up to 5 functions), and a full e-mail client. This model also supports SMS Flash Messages (class 0 SMS) to compatible phones; these messages may contain text of up to 70 characters and will appear instantly on the display of the receiving phone.

The display in the 3220 is an active matrix TFT type of LCD screen with a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels, which seems to have become something of a standard size these days, and this display is also capable of reproducing up to 65,536 different colours. Being MMS enabled means that this phone can exchange multimedia messages with other MMS compatible devices. The benefits of multimedia messaging are that it allows the user to create, send and receive messages that have more impact, due to the opportunities MMS offers to combine related sounds, pictures or video clips, and this obviously provides greater scope to communicate things that a simple text could not achieve on its own. MMS is also a good way to show your friends a special occasion you have experienced, or a glimpse at the places you are visiting. An image editor is included in the phone to enable you to modify the pictures that you wish to use in a MMS message.

An integrated VGA quality (640 x 480 pixels) camera is fitted into the 3220, and the camera lens is located on the back cover. There are 2 picture sizes (“standard” and “portrait”) and 3 picture qualities (“High”, “Normal” or “Basic”) available to the user, although there is always a trade-off to be considered, as with all digital cameras, between the quality of the pictures you take and the amount of memory that is required for their storage. Therefore, if you take pictures on the “High” setting, then you will not be able to fit as many into the phone’s memory as you would using the “Basic” setting. A night mode option is included to help you when you want to take shots in poor light conditions, and a timer is provided to assist with the taking of self-portraits. Pictures taken with the camera can be used as your own personal wallpapers, or you might take snaps of your friends and store them in the picture phonebook, they can then be used as picture ID to identify your contacts when they call you.

Besides still pictures, this phone is also capable of video recording, and it is possible to download and playback short video clips with the 3220. These video clips use the standard 3GPP format with AMR audio, and clips lasting up to 50 seconds may be recorded. The phone supports two resolutions of video: Sub-QCIF (128 x 96 pixels) and QCIF (176 x 144 pixels).

In common with most mobile phones, this model can be personalised in many different ways, and the user can download various images, animations, sounds or themes to match the particular style required. A theme is a package that may include a screen saver, a wallpaper image, a ringing tone and a colour scheme to customise the phone for different events and environments. The phone can also be set up so that call alerts make the phone’s side lights flash in time to the ringtones, so making it more likely that you will notice the call when in a noisy environment. There is a selection of realistic polyphonic ringtones to choose from, and this phone can use the sounds of over 128 different instruments, and play up to 24 of them at the same time. More polyphonic ringtones may be quickly downloaded when you want to try out some new sounds.

There is additional scope for personalisation by using other Xpress-on™ exchangeable front and back covers, and it is also possible to change the side grips with other Xpress-on™ grips. Still further customisation can be achieved by fitting your own cut-out covers under the transparent back cover, and a stencil is supplied to enable you to cut and create your own cover designs, which may use plain paper with a print or picture of your choosing.

Being Java™ enabled means that the 3220 can run a wide variety of Java applications and games. There are four games preloaded in the phone: “Club Pinball”, “Dance Delight”, “Phantom Spider”, plus “Survivor” (a multiplayer game based on the television series). To make the gaming experience more dramatic, the phone can provide the extra dimensions of lights, sounds and shakes to the game. When you need to use other games or applications, apart from the ones that come with the phone, it is an easy matter to download new programs over-the-air.

An important feature of the 3220 is its support for good data handling with integrated EDGE, GPRS and HSCSD technology, which ensures the user gets the fastest transfer of information. This has the additional benefit that you also get an “always on” connection to the network, where you pay for the amount of data that you use rather than the length of time that you are connected. This phone also includes WAP 2.0 and an xHTML browser, to provide the user with easy access to the mobile Internet. A wide range of information sources and services is now available to the mobile phone user via the WAP sites, and this provides all you need in the way of news, sports, entertainment, traffic, weather, financial or business support. A further asset is the E-mail client application, which supports the standard POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP protocols, and this allows the user to have access to their normal e-mail facilities while on the move.

For connectivity the 3220 has a Pop-Port™ connector to enable the use of a data cable link between the phone and a compatible PC. After connection you can exchange files and information with the other device, such as to transfer pictures and sounds, and you may synchronise your calendar, contacts and notes data with, say, your home PC. The phone also supports remote synchronisation using SyncML.

As is now an expected requirement, the 3220 has a collection of handy organiser facilities to help the user in their daily life, and in this phone there is a Calendar, To Do list, Notes, Clock, Alarms, Calculator, Currency Converter, Countdown Timer, Stopwatch, and a Wallet. In addition, the other usual phone features of T9 predictive text input and vibration alert are also included in the phone.

An optional accessory that might interest the 3220 owners is the Xpress-on™ Fun Shell, which allows you to produce messages in the air. You tap in your message and then wave the phone from side to side to create a light message in the air using a set of LED lights; this message can be seen across a space or room, such as in a disco. The Fun Shell also includes a built-in tilt sensor, which enables you to play games that involve motion by tilting the phone. Two of these motion games come with the Fun Shell: “AirExpress” and “SwampRacer”.
